Your AI is a new hire
with amnesia.

The assistants a team uses each see one app and forget the rest. The cost is the briefing, and it falls to the people who know the most., 5 min read

Think of the best hire you ever made, on their first morning: quick, careful and tireless. Now give them two rules. They may open only one app, and every evening they forget the day. That is the AI most teams work with today: an assistant in the chat app that reads chat, another in the tracker that reads tickets, and a coding agent that knows the paragraph someone pasted into it.

The cost does not arrive as a bill. It arrives as the briefing. Before an agent does anything useful, someone gathers the thread where the plan changed, the spec and the numbers in a spreadsheet, and pastes them in. The agent then works in minutes. The briefing took half an hour, and it fell to whoever knows where everything is, which is usually the person the team can least spare.

Here is how it goes wrong when nobody does anything wrong. On Tuesday, Tomas says in #launch that the launch is annual plans only. The billing spec still says monthly and annual, because nobody has had a minute to fix it. On Thursday, Priya asks her coding agent to build checkout and hands it the spec. It builds monthly and annual, carefully and well. The decision was in a place the agent could not see.

The usual answer is an assistant in every tool, or a search that reaches across them. Both help a person find things. Neither gives an agent the team's context, because that context is in no one tool: the decision is in a thread, the reason in a document, the number in a sheet, and each tool keeps its own copy and its own rules about who may read it. A search across them has to copy the data out and imitate those rules as they drift.

Together starts from the other end. Its agents are members of the team, with a name, a login, a token and a seat in the channels. They read the documents and sheets where the team keeps them, and act through the same API as the apps. Every change is recorded with who made it, when and the exact words, so whatever an agent says can cite it. When Priya's coding agent picks up checkout, it searches the workspace first, finds Tomas's message, builds annual-only, and leaves a comment on the line of the spec that is behind.

A new hire who forgets every night needs a briefing every morning. One who sits with the team, reads its channels and documents and keeps notes where everyone can see them needs none. Together gives agents that seat, and leaves the team one job: keeping the record worth reading.
